I actually used a company called A New Horizon. They are based in Florida and they help to work out a plan for you that is reasonable. I filled out an application on the internet and within a day they called me and we came up with a budget and they dealt with the credit companies to lower my APR or negotiate a settlement. I pay about 400 a month for 17,000 in debt and I'm about halfway through!

They didn't charge me anything and were very helpful...and my credit is fine!

Everything these Credit Solutions or CCCS type companies do, you can do yourself.

Talk to your creditors about settling your accounts. Most will cut them anywhere from 75% down to 50% of the balance. Spreading out the installments over 4 months would be a good idea. Pay one off and move to the next. Creditors that look at your report will see you are settling and they will tend to work with you more.

your safest bet is CCCS. (consumer credit counseling service) Those other companies rip you off and ruin your credit.
